Retoryczne innowacje/ Rhetorical innovations

2024-03-26

The theme of volume 1/2025 concerns the innovative potential of rhetoric in education. The conditions of varying access to knowledge, the development of digital technologies for information and communication, as well as artificial intelligence frame how teachers and students work today. The evolving forms and practices of communication, the challenges of attention deficits, the need for individual pathways in education, and the changing expectations of the labor market influence how schools and universities should rethink and redesign the educational processes and contents.

Rhetoric has long been a tool helping people to optimize decision-making on the basis of best arguments, which proves its value for managing innovative processes. Rhetoric has long enabled better and more engaged citizenship and inclusion of marginalized groups, which proves its value for social innovation and democratization. While the contemporary associations with innovations are often narrowed to technology or economy, the concept is equally valid for all walks of life, including education.

Rhetorical training may well help to foster competences that are often labeled as “future skills”such as critical thinking, analytic reasoning, sound argumentation, acknowledging various perspectives, decision-making, effective communication attuned to cultural and social diversity.

Rhetorical training may take various forms: from critiques of canonical texts, through Oxford debates, to media creations with the use of multimodal educational tools. We welcome submissions in (but not restricted to) the following areas of inquiry:

  • updating rhetorical training and education - from the sophists to AI
  • innovative teaching methods that include rhetoric
  • research and theorizing on rhetorical competences
  • upskilling and upscaling enabled by rhetorical educational traditions

Deadline for submission of manuscripts: June 30, 2024

Planned publication: March 2025
